❧ Green Meadows

About Green Meadows

A little world to wander through, made by Jake Hoover.

Follow the paths through six regions and twelve close places. Meet a few familiar woodland characters, look into a hollow log, or watch the water ripple. There is no score, time limit or right order to explore.

Old friends, a new visit

Thornton W. Burgess created the characters and stories that inspired Green Meadows. Harrison Cady’s early illustrations provide the foundation for their appearance. This explorer is an independent adaptation, with new dialogue, encounters, scenery and geography created for Green Meadows.

The landscape paintings and prepared character illustrations are new AI-assisted artwork, made with OpenAI’s image-generation tools and prepared for this experience. They are not historical Cady illustrations. The characters’ new words and actions are not quotations from Burgess. The map’s arrangement, colors and scale are our interpretation of his fictional world.

The historical sources

Our references include Burgess’s The Adventures of Peter Cottontail (1914), The Adventures of Danny Meadow Mouse (1915), The Adventures of Buster Bear (1916), The Adventures of Old Mr. Toad (1916) and other early Bedtime Story-Books. We consulted digitized texts and early Cady illustrations preserved by Project Gutenberg and the Internet Archive.

The identified early works and illustrations are in the public domain in the United States. Copyright rules differ elsewhere; this is not a claim of worldwide clearance or of public-domain status for every Burgess or Cady work, later edition, or recording. The public-domain status of those sources does not grant a license to the Green Meadows code or its newly created material.

Thanks to the libraries, digitizers and volunteer proofreaders who make these early books accessible. Their linked editions are separate websites. See Privacy for how this explorer works on your device.
